ONS reports: Rents may not be increasing as highly as we imagine

Reports from The Office for National Statistics show that in the last 12 months to August 2013 rents paid by tenants rose by just 1.2%.

Private rents in Great Britain excluding London rose by 0.8% during the same period. In London, rents rose by 1.9% and in the south-east by 1.1%. 

Contrasting the press’ portrayal of rents escalating uncontrollably, these figures show that in reality rents aren’t rising at the extortionate rate some may believe.
