Mental Health Awareness Week 2020

Mental Health Awareness Week 2020

Mental health is certainly on everyone’s minds and lips at the moment. As it was starting to come to the forefront we have been catapulted into disaster, and I think that we are all hyper aware of it
during this pandemic – our own, that of our colleagues, family, friends. We are all facing unimaginable lifestyle changes while trying to retain an element of normality; and this before you consider the day-to-day difficulties that many people face on a routine basis.

Perhaps Mental Health Awareness Week has fallen exactly when we need it this year. In the UK we are facing a third month of lockdown and the theme this year is one that we all need to take to
heart: Kindness.

During these difficult times, and indeed outside of them, the theme of kindness must ring strong. Speak kindly, act kindly, and above all, be kind.

Importantly, this is not just kindness towards others, but also towards ourselves.

When asked at 5 years old what I wanted to be when I grew up, I decided I wanted to be a hairdresser. My friends aimed to be astronauts or zoo-keepers, one even wished to be a penguin.

Twenty years later and I am seeing daily how acts of kindness big and small, from our words to our actions, inspire further acts, so I’d like to change my answer. If you can be anything during this
difficult time, be kind.
